How is it already time for school to begin? I swear, as the boys get older the days fly by faster and faster. The last six weeks of summer flew by and left me with very little time to write. I hope you were busy having tons of fun and making lots of family memories, too! I’ll write a post soon that includes a roundup of what we’ve done this summer.
If you follow me on Instagram then you know that we’ve decided to homeschool this year. Many have asked why/how we came to that decision. There were lots of factors that went into the decision and I’ll share that soon. Today I want to share a peek into our homeschool room. There is nothing I love more than taking an empty room and turning it into something fun! I love bold colors, crisp white furniture, clean lines and lots of options for organization. That’s exactly what I created. I used lots of items that we already had and went to IKEA for most of the rest. {God bless IKEA!}
I was originally going to homeschool my little men around our kitchen table, however, after doing morning work with them this summer I quickly realized that I had one kiddo who was easily distracted. And the kitchen is a room with lots of extra noises {probably the most distracting room in the house, because, well…FOOD!!!}, so I quickly decided that we needed a designated homeschool room to give my little men the space they needed to thrive. We are in a three level, three bedroom townhouse with not a lot of extra space. We decided that the best space for our classroom was in baby girl’s nursery (our third bedroom). Since we are still waiting to be matched with our baby girl from China, we decided it’s the only space that isn’t being used. {insert all of the tears}
I know that we will be matched one day soon and then we’ll have to rearrange the rooms all over again, but in the meantime, we took down her crib and converted her bedroom into our school room. It’s the smallest of all the rooms and at first I was worried that it wasn’t going to be enough space, but you know what…it works great!!! {Again, God bless IKEA!}
Without further ado, here’s the entrance to our room. My desk (and computer station) is straight ahead. With the room being so small, I needed a narrow desk and IKEA’s VITTSJO Laptop Table was the perfect size. The boys’ desks are to the right and whiteboards are to the left.
I was hoping to have a large central workstation for the boys, but our room was much too small for that. So, I decided to push the desks up agains the far wall. The MICKE Desk from IKEA was the perfect fit. They can be assembled with the cabinet either on the left or right. The chairs are from IKEA as are the desk lamps and wall clock. The rainbow colored workboxes were purchased at Michaels. I love the workbox system to keep the kiddos organized and on task. (What are workboxes? Post coming soon.)
Here is an image of one desk unit and workbox station.
We are slowly covering the closet door (containing all of baby girl’s things) with fun school related posters. This year the boys are studying the US and we are already beginning to memorize the states and capitals. This US Map poster can be found on Amazon. Oh and we can’t forget the AH-MAZING Solar Eclipse that just passed through this week. 🙂 The rolling cart is the RASKOG from IKEA. Sadly they don’t sell them in this fun color anymore, but they are one of my favorites. I have a couple. We use this to keep all of our arts and crafts supplies organized. Plus it’s on wheels, so I can wheel it right over to their workstation or anywhere else for that matter.
I was beyond grateful that my dad happened to be in town a couple weeks ago and he helped me hang the whiteboards and cork board (all purchased from Amazon). The organization unit is the KALLAX Shelf Unit from IKEA, as are the black bins, letter tray, and magazine files. This is where I store all of the school supplies that we may need, along with my teacher’s manuals.
Well that’s it, that’s our homeschool room! I hope you’ve enjoyed the tour and maybe given you some ideas for your own classroom. Happy Schooling!!
