How many times do you read a food label before you deem it “safe” for your littles? I always read it at least twice, once at the grocery store before I drop the item into my shopping cart and once before I serve it at home. However, now that I have two children, both whom zapped a good portion of my brain cells when they came into this world, I probably read the label more like five times. Partly because I get distracted while I’m reading it, the other part because as I pull the item out of my pantry I can’t remember what I decided about it. Do you have this problem, too?
Recently I was introduced to Content Checked and it’s revolutionized the way I shop and read labels. Content Checked is a phone app, for iPhone and Android, that analyzes each packaged food product to check if it fits the dietary needs of it’s user. Awesome, right?!?!?
Here’s how it works…
- Download the app.
- Set up your profile. Go into the “settings” and be sure to specify the foods that you are avoiding in the “allergies” section.
- Scan barcode on product in question.
- Check results.
Every food allergy mom (and dad) can use an extra set of eyes when reading labels for their food allergic littles. Now you have just that in your pocket. Of course, it isn’t meant to replace your own analysis of the label. However, using this app has helped me feel a little more confident when reading labels on new foods that haven’t been tried yet. I’ve used this at the grocery store, a friend’s house, and even at home. The Content Checked App has become my Food Allergy BFF. I’ve named her Samarra, meaning guardian. She gets me and is always looking out for me and my little men. If my Apple iPhone’s built-in personal assistant deserves a name, Siri, then I think my Content Checked Food Allergy BFF, deserves a name, too.
Content Checked already does so much just by analyzing the ingredients on the food label for me. However, there are a couple other features that I must share with you because they take this app from pretty cool to AH-MAZING!
Content Checked Special Features…
- Ingredient List. Each item you scan will give you a list of the product’s ingredients.
- Saved Searches. The app will save your scanned items in the “history.” This way you can access it at another time.
- Favorites. You can add certain items to your “favorites” category for easy access later.
- Alternatives. If a particular item isn’t safe, the app will give you “alternatives.” Who doesn’t want that?!?!? This may be my favorite feature.
- Sharing. If you find a safe product that you want to share with a close friend or on social media, you can do so with just a click of a button.
The above video will give you a better feel for the app and all it has to offer. I am so grateful for the Content Checked App, their staff, and all that the app does to lower my shopping anxiety and help to keep my little men safe.
**Disclaimer: The app currently doesn’t include cross-contamination risks (something that they are working to get added). It only analyzes the ingredients of the product. Each day they are working to add more and more products to the database. Although I enjoy this app, it should NEVER replace the careful reading of the label by yourself or loved ones.**
Epi-Family Partners With Content Checked…
I’m also excited to announce that I’ve partnered with the Content Checked team. I’ve joined their blogger team and will be writing for them on a monthly basis. I hope you’ll follow along each month as I share first-hand accounts of dealing with food allergic children. I’ll be discussing a variety of topics over the upcoming months. To kick off the series, I share about my little mens’ food allergy diagnosis and how their diagnosis affected me. You can read the full article here.
